Mobility modeling for vehicular communication networks

Research and development for vehicular communication networks have been gaining the momentum worldwide. The emerging paradigm of vehicular networks is expected to improve road safety, increase vehicular transportation efficiency, and support infotainment services to drivers and passengers. However, high vehicle mobility and frequent network topology changes pose significant technical challenges in reliable end-to-end information delivery. This presentation focuses on some recent studies on vehicle mobility modeling, which is essential to cluster-based networking algorithm and protocol development for satisfactory service quality. We first present a stochastic microscopic vehicle mobility model to capture the time variations of the distance between two consecutive vehicles on a highway. The proposed mobility model is used to characterize the length and the duration of a communication link connecting two nodes in the network for different vehicular traffic flow conditions. Then, we discuss the impact of vehicle mobility on node cluster stability. A lumped stochastic model is proposed to describe the temporal variations of a system of inter-vehicle distances, using the microscopic mobility model. The limiting behavior of a system of two neighboring clusters is modeled, and the steady-state number of common/ unclustered nodes between two clusters is approximately derived. Finally, we study how cluster instability affects the intra- and inter- cluster routing overhead. The proposed vehicle mobility model is a useful tool for mathematically analyzing the impact of mobility and node density on the performance of network protocols in vehicular communication networks.

Dr. Weihua Zhuang has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Waterloo, Canada, since 1993, where she is a Professor and a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Wireless Communication Networks. Her current research focuses on resource allocation and QoS provisioning in wireless networks, and on smart grid.She is a co-recipient of several best paper awards from IEEE conferences. Dr. Zhuang is the Technical Program Chair of IEEE VTC Fall 2017 to be held in Toronto, Canada. She was the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology (2007-2013), Technical Program Co-Chair of IEEE VTC Fall 2016, and the Technical Program Symposia Chair of the IEEE Globecom 2011. She is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, and an elected member in the Board of Governors and VP Publications of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society.
